UEFA Europa League football and €110,000 are up for grabs next season as Bangor City take on Rhyl FC at the BookPeople Stadium.
Both clubs fought their way through the Semi-Finals of the Play-offs to secure themselves a position of being only 90 minutes away from a prestigious feat. Bangor hosted Newtown last Saturday following both clubs finishing fourth and fifth respectively in the Championship Play-off. A Chris Jones goal in the 57th minute was enough to separate the two teams, as the home fans appealed for a free-kick just inside their own half, the referee waved advantage and a brilliant back heel by Les Davies allowed Chris Jones through on goal. Jones made no mistake as Mullock raced from his goal-line and put the ball confidently into the net.
Rhyl travelled to South Wales to face Carmarthen in the other Semi-Final with the Old Gold in strong form and the Lilywhites having lost their previous six matches. However, form was comprehensively thrown out of the window as Rhyl demolished Carmarthen 6-1 at the GenQuip Stadium. Two goals each from Dave Forbes, Paul McManus and Steve Lewis ensured that Greg Strong’s team are only one game away from the Europa League – a great achievement in their first season back in the Corbett Sports WPL.
The clubs also played each other the FAW Welsh Cup Round 3 back in December at the Corbett Sports Stadium where Bangor came out on top winning 2-1. Lewis scored a penalty to put Rhyl in the lead but Bangor swiftly reacted and Miley scored an equalizer from a Siôn Edwards free kick to put the away team level before the half time whistle.
