Craig Williams scored twie for Aber
Aberystwyth Town cemented their place at the Top of the Play Off Conference with an astonishing 4-0 win over Welsh Cup holders Prestatyn Town thanks to two goals from Craig Williams, and further strikes from Chris Venables and Mark Jones.
After a lively start which the visitors perhaps shaded, Chris Davies playing in an unaccustomed left wing role twice stung the palms of Mike Lewis in Aber's goal. The hosts, so strong at home these days, soon found their feet though and on 21 minutes Craig Williams cut inside and unleashed a superb strike from the edge of the area to open the scoring. Four minutes later Town gained a killer second after an excellent move when Geoff Kellaway disposessed Sean Hessey, allowing Williams to play in Venables, who scored an excellent second from 25 yards. Aber's confidence grew and they showed some sublime attacking football, with Kellaway heading Cledan Davies' left wing cross over, but the truth is they won the game with their hard work out of possession, reducing Prestatyn's goal threat virtually to zero. Two minutes before the break came a moment of massive controversy when an offside Lee Hunt was played onside by a home touch, and when Mike Lewis dived at his feet to win the ball, the referee awarded a penalty. Town were furious but they were soon celebrating when Lewis pulled off a fantastic save, and the Dias Stand was singing again.
The second half slowed down a touch and the visitors did see more of the ball, but apart from James Stead's effort which went wide, it was all in vain. Twenty minutes into the half the game was over, as Mark Jones beat John Hill-Dunt in Prestatyn's goal to Williams' corner, and headed home the third. By this point Aber were totally comfortable and in control, with Wyn Thomas twice going close, and with ten minutes to go Craig Williams scored his second with an astonishing lob over Hill-Dunt from 35 yards to cap a superb individual performance. Hill-Dunt denied Jones' header on the line, and then in the dying seconds the visitors did go close through Rob Hughes, but the scoreboard stuck at 4-0 for a memorable, and hugely impressive win for Aberystwyth Town.
