Wales v Scotland
Thursday - ko 7.35pm
This evening Park Avenue hosts one of its most prestigious games in years, as Wales Under 16s take on Scotland in a Victory Shield International.
Some remarkable players have taken played in the Victory Shield down the years, such as Ian Rush, Mark Hughes, Aaron Ramsey, Craig Bellamy, Kenny Dalglish, Jermaine Defoe and Jack Wilshire.
However, you may not know that fifty years ago, the greatest of them all, George Best, played in a Victory Shield game at Park Avenue.
The date was May 24th 1963, and Park Avenue hosted a Youth International between Wales and Northern Ireland. Best, aged 16 at the time, represented Northern Ireland that day and even at that time was described as “a star in the making.” Best gave the visitors an early lead, but Mervyn Jones from Llanidloes equalised to earn Wales a 1-1 draw.
Best must surely go down as the greatest player ever to grace the pitch at Park Avenue, but tonight gives you the opportunity to see the stars of tomorrow in the making. Tickets will be available on the gate priced at £5 for adults and free for children.
We at Aberystwyth Town FC would like to know more about George Best’s appearance at Park Avenue. If you were at that game, and have any recollections about the day, please contact Thomas Crockett at firstname.lastname@example.org.
