Manager Scott Young has revealed that he is relishing the opportunity of managing the club, writes Matthew Burgess.
After guiding the Steelmen to three straight victories and securing a place in the league’s Championship Conference, Young told BBC Radio Wales that being a manager is something that he has always aspired to.
“I think, long-term, I’ve always wanted to be manager - I’ve enjoyed working alongside Jonah (Mark Jones) and Peter Beadle, many years ago at Newport,” he told Rob Phillips on the Radio Wales Sport show.
“It’s something I enjoy and something I’ve always wanted to do. I’ve always felt that after playing football I wanted to go into management and coaching and I enjoy being responsible for making decisions.”
After beginning his tenure with mixed results, with a home victory over Prestatyn followed by a run of three defeats, Young has fended off nagging suspension and injury woes to guide the Blues into something of a purple patch over the festive period.
Convincing back-to-back victories over Afan Lido was followed up with Saturday’s commanding win over Bala Town, to clinch a sought-after top-six finish with a game remaining.
“We met as a group before Christmas and we knew it was important that we took six points off Lido. Being a derby, they’re never easy games but we acquitted ourselves well against them in both games and with good win on Saturday and now we can look forward to Bangor.
“We wanted to make sure that we didn’t need to go to Bangor needing to get something as it’s a tough place to go.
“Everyone I’ve talked to has said the League’s come on over the last few years and it’s a very competitive - anybody can beat anyone, so it’s important that we prepare the players well and give them every chance we can for the Saturday.
“Port Talbot is a great club, the Chairman and Board work hard for me so I can just get on with it. And [at Cardiff City] Malky Mackay’s door is always open to anyone and I can knock his door and have a chat with him whenever I can.”
