Chris Mullock made a great save to deny Aber
Aberystwyth Town battled to gain a valuable point at Newtown yesterday afternoon, coming within inches of a famous win but ultimately having to settle for a goal less draw.
After a delayed start, Aber created a few early chances, and Mark Jones went close on more than one occasion. He headed just over the bar after Stuart Jones had headed on Antonio Corbisiero's free kick, and was then denied in a one on one by a terrific stop from Newtown's Chris Mullock in goal. Another Jones shot flew over from a narrow angle, and the hosts threatened too, but Mike Lewis denied Craig Williams' free kick and Andy Jones' shot, and a rather bland first half ended goalless.
The visitors improved markedly after the break. Craig Williams moved out wide, and almost made an instant impact, but his shot was deflected wide. Geoff Kellaway also had a shot deflected off target from the opposite side, and Corbisiero's was next to be denied. Stuart Jones headed over from a corner, but at the other end the Black and Greens were defending well, with Lewis in goal showing a safe pair of hands, and Peter Hoy also giving a defensive master class. Andy Jones headed the hosts' best chance wide from Max Penk's cross, but was then sent off for a second yellow card with a minute to go. Sean Evans had a dangerous effort saved for the Robins, then at the other end Chris Venables almost grabbed a crucial injury time winner, but his shot once again was deflected to safety, and that was that.
