Aberystwyth Town gave a terrific performance this afternoon to comprehensively defeat second placed Prestatyn Town at Park Avenue, in a game lit up by a Mark Jones hat trick on his home debut, which coincided with his 24th birthday.
The hosts started with a high tempo and in a shape which nullified Prestatyn’s 3-5-2 formation. Mark Jones shot over the bar, and was then felled by Lee Kendall in the visitors goal, which provoked an angry reaction from both sides. Declan Carroll then hit the bar with a cross, and Wyn Thomas had a header saved by Kendall from Matty Collins’ free kick. Jason Price fired wide for Prestatyn but Aber’s disciplined offside trap was continually frustrating Andy Parkinson. On 33 minutes Paul O’Neill felled Jones in the area to gift a penalty to the Black and Greens, but Jordan Follows’ penalty was saved by Kendall, to keep the scores level at the break.
The hosts again started brightly after the break, controlling possession and defending well, particularly through the commanding Wyn Thomas. Parkinson had another shot well saved by Mike Lewis but then finally with eighteen minutes to go the damb burst, and Thomas’ free kick rebounded to Jones who smashed home from the right side. Against a backdrop of swooping starlings, the Black and Greens continued to press, and eleven minutes after the first, Michael Walsh released Jones down the right with a fantastic ball, and the new signing scored his twelfth goal of the season from a narrow angle, to the delight of the Dias Stand. Sion James made a terrific tackle to deny Parkinson, and things got even better for Aber in injury time. First Jones found a pocket and released Follows, who made amends for his penalty miss by notching Aber’s third, and then Follows returned the favour by playing Jones in with a delicate lob over Kendall to make it 4-0. Parkinson did nip in to head a consolation goal for Prestatyn in the 95th minute, but that could not spoil a terrific day for Aber Town.
