Zak Evans scored the opener
A disappointing Aberystwyth Town were outplayed this afternoon at Park Avenue by a resurgent Newtown side, who ended 2012 with a deserved 2-0 victory which takes them above the Black and Greens in the Welsh Premier League table.
The game started in a fairly promising manner for the home team. Glyndwr Hughes came close to scoring from a Cledan Davies free kick, and Jordan Follows then hit the cross bar. Declan Carroll showed some nice trickery then fired just wide, as did Follows minutes later. Luke Boundford curled a shot over the bar for Newtown, but then the hosts created a superb move. Bari Morgan fed Follows in on goal, and he delayed his shot, instead laying the ball back to Michael Walsh, whose excellent cross was headed inches wide by Hughes. Unfortunately, this was as good as it got for Town, and from this point on the visitors were dominant. On 35 minutes Zac Evans found some space on the right wing and smashed the ball past Mike Lewis to give Newtown the lead. Craig Williams then had a shot saved, as did Rhydian Davies for Aber, and Newtown led 1-0 at the break.
Aber did try to respond after the restart, and Follows again clipped the crossbar. Evans for Newtown lobbed over a good chance, but then on the hour the result was settled, when Kieron Mills-Evans scored from a few yards after a goalmouth melee in which the hosts claimed goalkeeper Mike Lewis was impeded. From here on in Aber were under the cosh and indebted to Lewis for keeping the score down. He denied Evans again, the excellently mobile Boundford, Gareth Partridge and Mathew Cook. In response sub Christy Gale put in a great cross which no one quite managed to get on the end of, and Carroll fired over for Aber, but in the end the visitors walked away comfortable winners.
