Craig Hanford scored an own-goal
Despite the chilly climate, the sunshine returned to Park Avenue this afternoon as Aber Town earned a vital three points at home to Carmarthen thanks to an own goal from visiting defender Craig Hanford.
Mike Lewis replaced James Wood in goal for the Black and Greens, and he was a busy man in a high tempo first half during which the visitors created more chances. Aber started promisingly with Declan Carroll going close and Cledan Davies seeing a shot saved, but then Carmarthen came back into it. Lewis did well to save a shot from Scott Quigley from the right, and then denied McCreesh from the same side. Lewis gathered a lob from McCreesh soon afterwards, and then denied Quigley from the left. For Aber, Carroll saw a good shot saved by Steve Cann, to keep the scoreline blank at half time.
The second half was in truth a rather dour affair, Jordan Follows and Carroll had shots saved by Cann, and Fowler had gone wide for the visitors, but in the 63rd minute came the pivotal moment. Cledan Davies did well to get a deep cross into the box, and Follows’ cheeky stab at goal was deflected by Craig Hanford in a beautiful arc over his own goalkeeper Cann, to delight the young supporters watching the game in the Dias Stand. From here on Aber sat deeper, and the visitors employed fairly unsophisticated long ball tactics to try and break them down, but Gavin Cadwallader and Wyn Thomas held firm at the back, and Lewis was there to make a couple of late blocks. Liam Thomas headed just wide for the visitors in a tense injury time, and that was that. The Black and Greens had defended well and held on for a vital win.
Aberystwyth Town is delighted to report that the match was witnessed by the 1970 Amateur Cup Winning side gathered together by Bryan Pugh Jones. We would like to thank them all for attending, and hope to see them again in the not too distant future. The Black and Greens now move on to a game at Bala Town next week. Travel details will be confirmed in due course.
