Aberystwyth Town fans went home disappointed after the Black and Greens let a commanding lead slip, conceding two late goals to a plucky Newtown side who escaped Park Avenue with a draw.
The game started at a fast pace, with both sides attacking strongly. Chris Hartland looked busy up front for the visitors, and he warmed Steve Cann's fingertips with an early strike, while at the other end Lewis Codling shot into the side netting for the hosts. The game did settle down after a frantic start, but despite a lack of clear cut chances, there was plenty of good football on display, with Craig Williams particularly impressive for Aber.
Twelve minutes into the second half Aber got a break when Newtown keeper Dave Roberts, recently signed from Aber, barged into Luke Sherbon, and Ricky Evans slotted the penalty home to give Aber a lead which they just about deserved. The hosts were superb for the next half an hour; Roberts palmed James McCartens free kick just wide, then Lewis Codling headed narrowly over. With Ricky Evans pulling the strings up front Aber were purring and they doubled their lead when hard work by sub Luke Powell, he of the magic headband, saw the ball fall to Evans in the area, and he fed Sherbon on the left who buried the ball home.
Aber were cruising but were left stunned when two late headers in the last six minutes, from skipper Gavin Cadwallader and Shane Sutton, rescued a point for Newtown.
