Hayes is Quay to Nomads Victory

A precious goal by Mike Hayes midway in the first half provided Quay with a lifeline in their quest to climb into the League's top 10 ahead of next season.

At the same time, Porthmadog's latest home defeat - and their third consecutive setback without scoring - plunged Tomi Morgan's team into serious trouble. The moment that mattered followed a Quay corner from the right on 19 minutes and a partial clearance by the home defence to the edge of the box, where Hayes powered a half volley into the roof of the net.

Porthmadog's difficulties were compounded around the hour, when experienced striker Paul Roberts was shown a straight red card for alleged violent conduct in a scuffle with Alan Glover. This showdown between two hard-pressed sides hardly sparkled, with neither really impressing, and there was a lot of huffing and puffing.

Porthmadog's best chance was on offer just ahead of half time, when Chris Jones and Aden Shannon both got close to the visitors' Terry McCormick but failed to finish.
