Kick off:14:30 Sunday, 22nd Nov 2009
Fixture Type: Welsh Premier League
Referee: Ceri Richards
The New Saints continued their excellent form to win convincingly at Park Hall this afternoon, with a 4-0 romp over Rhyl.
Andy Cale's side are now up to second in the table and trail Llanelli by a one goal difference. The hosts were beaten 3-0 in the corresponding fixture last season, so the turnaround in this result outlines the club's title credentials against the current Champions. On-loan striker Steve Abbott opened the scoring on ten minutes and they doubled the lead from the penalty spot as Scott Ruscoe scored his third in as many games. Winger Craig Jones then made it 3-0 two minutes before the break for his second strike in as many games.
Rhyl changed their formation after the break and brought Matthew Williams on for Tyrone Kirk, but it didn't make too much difference as the stubborn Saints defence kept the Lilywhites at bay. Matthew Berkeley made it 4-0 four minutes after the break to complete a miserable afternoon for Rhyl player/boss Greg Strong.
The Saints have now beaten Llanelli and Rhyl in their last two League games and scored six without reply. They also kept a clean sheet in their two Loosemores Cup Semi Final matches against Port Talbot and in their previous League game against the Druids as well. If you also include the 2-0 Welsh Cup win against Cambrian 'keeper Paul Harrison and his outstanding defenders have not conceded a goal in 626 minutes, since Rhys Griffiths score after four minutes in the Loosemores Cup Quarter Final on 27th October.
