BOTH sides huffed and puffed, but chances were in short supply as they fought out a goalless stalemate at Latham Park.
Defences held sway for most part in the deadlock, with the two camps struggling for that cutting edge in the final third as they toiled for a winner despite their efforts.
It was Carmarthen who went closest to snatching the spoils when Mark Pritchard lobbed home debutant keeper Dave Roberts after 15 minutes but the ball hit the bar. Newtown would have been satisfied with the clean sheet, but know they need more to show from their home efforts if they are to finish in the top 10.
Striker Paul Roberts, making his debut after his switch from Porthmadog, had the Robins best chance when his header was saved by visiting 'keeper Neil Thomas while Damien Daniels also nodded over late on. At the other end, Carmarthen struggled to create any clear chances.
Newtown boss Darren Ryan was happy with the defensive improvements in his team's first appearance on home soil since their five-goal hammering by Bangor on December 12.
