BALA showed again that they're not just in the Welsh Premier to make up the numbers with a spirited performance to frustrate The New Saints. The league newcomers more than matched their title chasing hosts on the artificial Park Hall surface, but needed some fine late saves from 'keeper Leon Bimpson to ensure they returned with a share of the spoils.
For TNS, it was a disappointing afternoon as they failed to take advantage of a first defeat of the season for leaders Rhyl at Neath. With the Bala defence tiring late on, Bimpson ensured his side held firm after pulling off three excellent late stops to deny Steve Abbott, Jamie Wood and a Tommy Holmes header as the Saints pressed.
For the hosts, midfielder Scott Ruscoe saw a string of efforts from distance fly narrowly wide in the first half, while Chris Seargeant was also off target early in the second half and defender Phil Baker put a header wide from a Ruscoe cross.
Substitute Ryan Marriott proved a lively customer on his appearance, but spurned a golden chance of giving his side the lead when failing to capitalise in front of goal following good work by Wood and Aeron Edwards.
Battling Bala had their moments, looking lively on the break as early as the first minute, with TNS keeper Paul Harrison tipping a Ross Jefferies shot away for a corner.
In the second half Harrison saved well from Osian Jones while the keeper also denied TNS old boy John Toner from marking his return to Park Hall this season with a late winner.
