Druids flying start earns first League Win

THREE goals in the first quarter of an hour gave NEWI Cefn Druids a first league win of the season.

Mike Heverin opened the scoring for The Ancients with his seventh goal of the season before Chris McGinn's brace wrapped up the points at that early stage despite a Porthmadog fightback.

The game was only three minutes old when Heverin capitalised on a defensive mix-up to ghost around his marker and clip the ball over the advancing Richard Harvey and into the net.

Druids doubled the advantage three minutes later when Ricky Evans' free-kick from the left found McGinn on his own at the back post and the striker made no mistake. McGinn got his second of the night on 15 minutes in fine style.

The visitors launched a quick break and McGinn saw an opportunity to shoot from 30 yards out and his effort left Harvey with no chance. Porthmadog's defence was now all at sea but Evans and Heverin were unable to capitalise on further mix-ups in the home rearguard.

Seven minutes before the break Porthmadog reduced the deficit when Ryan Davies controlled a free-kick on his chest and found John Rowley who was able to drill his shot through a crowd of players and into the net. McGinn came close to his hat-trick in the second half after a through ball split the home defence, but Harvey did well to save at the striker's feet.

A tense finish was in the offing as, with three minutes remaining, Carl Jones' run caught out the Druids defence and he found Gareth Parry who was allowed to cut past the defence and beat Carl Edwards in the Druids goal.

But it was Druids who held on for the victory - their third in a row in all competitions.
