A late strike from Michael Parker salvaged a deserved point for the league newcomers following a spirited showing at Latham Park. With Newtown down to 10 men, Prestatyn pushed for a leveller and were rewarded two minutes from time when a Stephen Hoult corner saw Steve Bowes fire towards goal and Parker got the final touch.
The Mid Wales men lived to regret spurning their early chances, with Craig Moses denied by a goal-line clearance from Russell Jones after beating keeper John Dunt. With the home side on top, the breakthrough came on half-time when full-back Craig Williams cut inside to lash a left-foot drive into the top corner.
Newtown, however, suffered an early setback to the second half when defender Hugh Clarke was shown a second yellow card for bringing down John Griffiths, which forced the hosts back for long spells. Despite being a man short, Moses continued to pose the Prestatyn defence problems but could not beat Dunt, with the keeper again blocking with his body before Neil Mitchell fired wide with the goal open from a Moses knockdown.
Keeper David Jones had a busy final 20 minutes as he blocked a Griffiths shot. Then Bowes fired wide before Parker found a way through two minutes from time.
