Wilde Sends Saints to the Top

The New Saints went to the top of the Principality Building Society Welsh Premier League on Friday evening after a 1-0 victory at NEWI Cefn Druids' Plaskynaston Ground.

Saints midfielder Jamie Wood had the first chance of the game, when his volley from the edge of the box, went just wide of the right-hand post following a good Steve Beck cross. Mike Wilde was then denied from the edge of the box as Chris Mullock pushed away his powerful effort. Skipper John Leah was also unlucky when his 35 yard piledriver drifted inches wide, following a good build up from Wood and Barry Hogan as the Saints were well on top of the hosts. Hogan and Wood combined well again down the right but Mullock denied Alex Darlington from a yard and the same man also fired wide moments later, when in a good position.

The Saints finally took the lead on 56 minutes when Mike Wilde struck for the visitors after a clever pass from Darlington. This proved to be the decisive goal for Andy Cale's side who have won all three of their matches this season without conceeding a goal, with two League wins and one in the Loosemores Cup.
