A strong start by NEWI Cefn Druids went unrewarded as The Ancients fell to a Boxing Day derby defeat at Airbus UK Broughton. Geraint Lewis had got Druids off to a flying start in just the third minute when he picked up on a loose ball just inside the Airbus half. He nudged the ball forward and, from 30 yards out, unleashed an unstoppable shot past Chris Doran.
Druids were unable to build on that start as the home side started to come forward more as the half progressed. Despite this, Druids looked untroubled until the 37th minute when Airbus equalised. A high ball forward down the right caught out full-back Andrew Jackson, allowing the ball to be knocked back to former Druid Mark Allen who found the bottom corner of the net.
Then, on the stroke of half time, Airbus took the lead from the penalty spot when Carl Edwards brought down Paul Hallows. The 'keeper was sent the wrong way by Ryan Edwards' spot kick. The half-time interval saw Druids make a change to try and get back into the game with Darren Williams coming on to replace joint player-manager Lee Jones.
The substitution didn't work as, five minutes into the second half, Hallows doubled the hosts' advantage when he volleyed home from a knock-down following a long ball forward. The striker could have got on the scoresheet three minutes earlier but Edwards did made a great save with his legs to deny the frontman.
With 25 minutes remaining, Druids did reduce the arrears when a low ball was played into the crowded Airbus box. Another former Druid, Adam Hunter, was first to the ball, but his prod found his own net via the inside of the post. Druids went in search of the equaliser but yet again this season they were unable to build on the good result from the previous game.
