The New Saints moved six points clear at the top of the Principality Welsh Premier as Spanish striker Oscar Gonzalez sent them on their way as soon as the seventh minute. Saints boss Ken McKenna made five changes to the side that drew with Rhyl on Saturday, but his team still managed overcame NEWI Cefn Druids at Treflan this evening.
Cautious of the fact that his squad have a hectic run in to the season, McKenna handed starts to Barry Hogan, Gonzalez, Chris King, Carl Lamb and John Toner with Tommy Holmes, John Leah, Scott Ruscoe, Mike Wilde and Jamie Wood all dropping out of the starting eleven.
The strength in the Saints squad was evident though as early as the seventh minute as the Basque man Gonzalez opened the scoring from a half cleared clearance, this was even after Carl Lamb had a goal ruled out against his former team. The impressive Duane Courtney, who has proved to be an outstanding signing from for the Saints doubled the lead on 26 minutes, before the home side were given a scare.
Striker Mike Heverin continued his good run of form for the Druids and pulled one back six minutes later after a defensive blunder from the usually reliable Michael Jackson. The match wasn't settled until the final minute of the game though, when sub Mike Wilde scored ten minutes after coming on for Toner. That goal put the match beyond doubt with a third for the League leaders, who have now gone six points clear at the top of the table.
